What is an Augmented Reality app?
An augmented reality app, or AR app, uses technology to bring computer graphics and animations into the real world. A student can look at 3D, interactive images of space or of the human body right on their desk! Here are some great AR apps to use in the classroom.
Amazing Space Journey- 3D Solar System
Price: FREE!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amazing-space-journey-3d-solar/id579895132?mt=8
This app brings the extraordinary science of space right into your classroom! Students are able to explore the solar system with their iPad and deepen their understanding of the planets. Because it is an AR app, students can explore beyond our mysterious sky right from their own desk!
Guinness World Records 2013 Augmented Reality
Price: FREE! (With the Guinness World Records 2013 book)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/guinness-world-records-2013/id555282131?mt=8
Thus app allows images from Guinness World Records 2013 to jump off of the page! Instead of looking at a picture of a shark and some facts about it, see the shark jump right off of the page to attack! There were some bad reviews of this app, but I had no problem with it!
Anatomy 4D
Price: FREE!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/anatomy-4d/id555741707?mt=8
This app provides 3D images of the human body that will help your students learn more than what any textbook can tell them! Because it is 3D and can be viewed from all angles, students can see a more accurate portrayal of the human body. This app is probably appropriate for the older students, grades 8-12.
Peppa’s Magic Camera from Paulton’s Park
Price: FREE!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/peppas-magic-camera-from-paultons/id510646952?mt=8
This app is just fun! It would be great for students to get familiar with AR apps and how to use their iPad correctly to view the AR animations. It can be hard for students to get used to holding their device, so this app would be perfect for students to practice with.
IMAG-N-O-TRON: “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” Edition
Price: $0.99 (Must also have the book, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imag-n-o-tron-fantastic-flying/id534396897?mt=8
This was my favorite app that I researched! When students read The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris (which is a fantastic book) they can use their iPad to view 3D images of the book to make it literally come to life before their eyes! Great for students who might have a disinterest in reading because the visuals are so exciting! I love this app and I hope that they will start doing this for a lot more books.
